Kid Couture? What do you Think?

Today the NY Times came out with an article titled "That Dress is So Preschool", about the rise of designer kids lines.  It's all the buzz on twitter today, amongst bloggers and the rich and famous.

Here's the link to the article.

I was completely shocked and appalled by the prices.  I was also completely disgusted that parents would throw money away on such frivolous items, especially when so many people are suffering in this struggling economy.  I can just think of so many other uses for such decadence, even if they have money to burn.

Spend it on their perfect prep school, their college fund, sign them up for cool activities, have the children pick a charity to donate the money to, buy school supplies for their school or a struggling school, just don't light a match to that money (aka buying babies and little kids couture!).

The article goes on to say " children should be children and not little brand ambassadors or, in the current parlance, “prostitots.” She said: “I can’t bear advertising on children. And why would a child need to have anything remotely sexy? To me, it’s unethical.”

I couldn't agree more!

Such an article made me think of yet another current controversial topic...this...

Am I a hypocrite for tivo'ing this?  Believe me, B will not be a pageant kid, but that doesn't mean that I don't enjoy the sheer ridiculousness of it while I run on the treadmill.

It seems like parents are exploiting their children more and more.  Such topics also make me think of this famous family

Are kids just the new accessory?  ::gag::  Not to this girl.

What do you think?

  1. Come on, love, you aren't anyone unless your kid is sporting a Burberry diaper cover. Don't you know? ::eyeroll::

I have a few nice things for Carina, but bought them for $5 at TJMaxx. Your kids poop on, spit up on, and get food and dirt all over their clothes. I really try not to judge, but anyone who spends thousands of dollars on their baby/toddler/little kid's clothes is dumb. Just dumb.

    1. I discussed this topic with hubs last night, and we both agree he would be FURIOUS if I spent more than 60.00 on baby clothes. I was reminded of how "dirty" kids get at daycare this week when B attended a couple of days. They just DO NOT CARE if food is caked all over their outfits. I'm such a clean freak...so I never let this happen. I remember having to get used to it with T. Gotta roll with the punches. I would rather they love up on her than worry about wiping her off. She went in raggy clothes today.

  2. Umm no - I agree spend your money on more important things.

I love when I see a celebrity kid in clothes from old navy or gymboree. It makes me think they are a little more aware of what beign a parent is all about.

We watch Toddlers and Tiaras too. I don't feel like a hypocrite at all. :)

    1. I agree! I have more respect for those celebs that actually act like "real" people, not all high-and-mighty. That Suri Cruise is going to be such a spoiled brat. How sad that I already dislike a poor little child because of the fact that her parents spoil her and treat her as an accessory! gross

  3. I can't even imagine spending that much money on clothes for a child. Of course I can't imagine spending that kind of money on clothes for me, either. I am pretty sure that the most expensive thing Andrew owns is under $30.

Sadly I do think that some people treat their kids as accessories, though. It's very disturbing.

    1. I get buyers remorse when I even buy a coffee from McDonalds every morning, let alone clothes for me or my kids.

  4. I cannot imagine spending that much on an outfit for my child. Or even for me! That's more than my wedding gown was!

    1. My wedding gown was also cheap...I didn't even spend 1K, I wasn't all that fond of it...but I had a helluva time! That's all that mattered to me. :)

  5. I have a few really nice things for Evie (usually on sale or a gift or a little splurge), but really $3000? People are INSANE. I really think that the way people pimp out their kids to get attention for themselves is just disgusting. Also, Toddlers and Tiaras makes me want to stab myself in the eye and shoot the mothers. What morons, and even worse, our daughters have to grow up with their daughters.

  6. If people have enough money where $1,500 for a top feels like $20 to them than I guess they can justify it, but I don't know of anyone even people making over $200K a year can afford to buy their children these types of clothes. It's nuts! It's a waste.
